What’s more important than writing an amazing cold email? Making sure that customer needs what you’re selling.

In this video we focus on what mobile app development companies specifically should ask when doing research for cold emails, using Fortune 500 company American Express as an example.

As I stated above, it is not so much the content of the email itself that determines whether you’re going to get a meeting as much as it is the need of the person on the other side.

Take a little time to find out if that customer is really in the need of your services.

I’m about to highlight what to ask yourself when getting prospects to get sure you’re contacting the ones who really need mobile app development.

For instance, I’m using American Express, they’re the perfect example since they have multiple departments, has several apps on the market, and make use of agencies from time to time.

Let’s start with the whole process.

1- Do they have an app right now?

In the video, we noticed that American Express has a bunch of apps with different criteria. So the answer is YES. You can now proceed to the next question.

2- How’s it doing?

To answer this question, we need to address if an app needs improvement.

We checked Amex Mobile, which has a rating of 4.5 stars (476 reviews); then Serve, a transfer money app which has 2.5 stars and 8 reviews, this is what we were looking for, an app that needs improvement. Let’s jump to question 3.

3- Does the company work with agencies?

You just have to go to Google and type the following:

Now I’ll break down how this is.

First, we have the company name, then we try to find out if any app development company has them in their portfolio. Make sure to opt for sources different from the official American Express website.

Needless to say that you can do the exact thing with any company.

In the video, we found two agencies that worked with AMEX in the past: The Webby Awards and Cargo Collective. This fact is more than enough to claim that they DO work with agencies. Let’s proceed to the next question.

4- Which department runs the app?

For this question, we will google “american express serve”. We can see that there’s an independent official website for the app, this is the department running the app.

5- Who’s the key person at the company?

Now let’s go to LinkedIn and search for “american express serve” to see what pops out. In the video, we found “Serve an American Express Company”, and “Serve/American Express”.

What you need to do now, is to find the one who is in charge. In Serve/American Express we found the Director of IT, Tom Westerberg.

Next, we need his email address, so we just go to emailhunter.co, type in “american express.com” and check the directories to understand the way they write their email addresses. In Amex is firstname.lastname@americanexpress.com so it’s going to be tom.westerberg@americanexpress.com.

That’s it! That’s how you find them! So go on and use this method to make sure your customer needs matches your services.
